Breast Cancer
Radiate Resilience: Navigating the Journey to Breast Health
Welcome to Universal Hospital’s Breast Cancer, where we are dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for individuals affected by breast cancer. Breast cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the breast.
Types of Breast Cancer:
- Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): This is a non-invasive cancer where abnormal cells are found in the lining of a breast duct but haven’t spread outside the duct.
- Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): This is the most common type of breast cancer, where cancer cells invade surrounding tissues in the breast.
- Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC): Cancer begins in the milk-producing glands (lobules) and then invades nearby tissues in the breast.
- Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: This type lacks receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and HER2/neu, making treatment more challenging.
Risk Factors:
- Gender and Age: Women are at a higher risk, and the risk increases with age.
- Family History and Genetics: A family history of breast cancer and certain gene mutations (BRCA1, BRCA2) increase the risk.
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Long-term use of hormones may increase the risk.
- Personal History of Breast Cancer or Certain Non-Cancerous Diseases: Having had breast cancer before or certain non-cancerous breast diseases increases the risk.
Symptoms:
Common signs and symptoms of brain cancer include:
- Headaches: Often severe and persistent, worsening over time.
- Seizures: Sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain.
- Cognitive Changes: Memory loss, confusion, or changes in personality.
- Motor Changes: Weakness, difficulty walking, or loss of coordination.
Detection and Diagnosis:
- Mammography: X-ray images of the breast can detect tumors before they are palpable.
- Breast Self-Exams: Regular self-exams help in identifying changes in the breast.
- Clinical Breast Exams: A healthcare professional examines the breasts for abnormalities.
- Biopsy: A sample of tissue is taken for examination under a microscope to confirm the presence of cancer.
Stages of Breast Cancer:
- Stage 0: Non-invasive cancer.
- Stages I-III: Invasive cancer with increasing size and lymph node involvement.
- Stage IV: Cancer has spread to distant organs, also known as metastatic breast cancer.
Treatment:
- Surgery: Removing the tumor or the entire breast (mastectomy).
- Radiation Therapy: Using high-energy rays to target and kill cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: Drugs to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells.
- Hormone Therapy: Blocking hormones that fuel certain types of breast cancer.
- Targeted Therapy: Drugs targeting specific molecules involved in cancer growth.
Prevention and Awareness:
- Regular Screening: Early detection through mammograms and self-exams can improve outcomes.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol intake may reduce the risk.
- Genetic Counseling: Especially for those with a family history or genetic mutations.
