Welcome to Universal Hospital’s Ovarian Cancer Care, where we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals affected by ovarian cancer. This webpage serves as a valuable resource to help you understand ovarian cancer, its diagnosis, treatment options, and the specialized care available at Universal Hospital.

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs responsible for producing eggs. It is often referred to as the “silent killer” because symptoms may not manifest until the disease is in an advanced stage. Ovarian cancer can arise from various cell types within the ovaries, and there are different subtypes with distinct characteristics.

Risk Factors:

  • Age: Ovarian cancer is more common in older women, with the highest incidence in those over 60.
  • Family History: A family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer increases the risk.
  • Inherited Gene Mutations: Mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, and other genes are associated with higher ovarian cancer risk.
  • Personal History of Cancer: Women with a history of breast, colorectal, or endometrial cancer may have an increased risk.
  • Reproductive Factors: Factors such as early onset of menstruation, late onset of menopause, or never having given birth can affect risk.

Symptoms:

  • Abdominal or Pelvic Pain: Persistent discomfort or pain in the pelvic or abdominal region.
  • Bloating: Persistent bloating or feeling full quickly after eating.
  • Changes in Bowel or Bladder Habits: Changes in bowel movements or frequent urination.
  • Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
  • Fatigue: Persistent lack of energy.
Ovarian Cancer stages

Staging:

Ovarian cancer is staged based on the extent of the disease, ranging from Stage I (localized) to Stage IV (advanced and widespread).

  1. Stage I: Cancer confined to one or both ovaries.
  2. Stage II: Cancer involves pelvic organs or extends beyond the ovaries.
  3. Stage III: Cancer spreads to abdominal lining or lymph nodes.
  4. Stage IV: Cancer extends to distant organs or the fluid around the lungs.

Diagnosis:

  1. Pelvic Examination: To assess the size and shape of the ovaries.
  2. Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI to visualize the ovaries and surrounding structures.
  3. Blood Tests: CA-125 blood test may be elevated in some cases but is not specific to ovarian cancer.
  4. Biopsy: Removal of a tissue sample for laboratory examination to confirm cancer.

Treatment:

  1. Surgery: Removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and, in some cases, the uterus and surrounding tissues.
  2. Chemotherapy: Systemic drugs to kill or inhibit cancer cells, often administered after surgery.
  3. Radiation Therapy: High-dose X-rays or other forms of radiation to destroy cancer cells.
  4. Targeted Therapy: Drugs that specifically target molecules involved in cancer growth.

Prevention:

There is no guaranteed way to prevent ovarian cancer, but certain measures may reduce risk:

  • Oral Contraceptives: Long-term use may reduce the risk.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Having children and breastfeeding may be protective.
  • Tubal Ligation: Surgical procedures like tubal ligation may reduce the risk.

Prognosis:

  •  Prognosis in ovarian cancer depends on factors such as the stage at diagnosis, the type of cancer, and the individual’s overall health. Early detection is challenging, and ovarian cancer is often diagnosed in advanced stages.

Screening:

  •  Routine screening for ovarian cancer in the general population is not currently recommended due to the lack of highly effective screening methods. Women with a family history or specific risk factors may undergo more intensive surveillance.
